Due to the current COVID-19 guidance, the courses that Martin is able to offer are subject to the following restrictions:

  • Courses will be run on a private tuition basis and are limited to no more than two students from the same household or support bubble.

  • The courses will take place entirely in the workshop, with access to the cottage for using the toilet.

  • Students will have to bring their own lunch.

  • Students will be asked to bring a face covering that they are comfortable wearing, if they wish to use one.


While a range of standard courses are available, tailor-made courses can also be provided to meet specific student requirements. 

The following courses are currently available:

Two-Day Spoon Carving Course

​A two day course covering:

  • Making at least two projects.

  • Wood; selection, storage & properties.

  • ​Knife & axe skills.

  • Tool selection & sharpening.

Knife Skills & Whittling Course

A one day course covering:

  • Knife selection.

  • Knife skills.

  • Knife sharpening.

  • Wood selection.

  • Making a number of projects.

One-Day Spoon Carving Course
A one day course covering:
  • Basic knife & axe skills.
  • Tool sharpening.
  • Making a simple spoon.
Introduction to Spoon Decoration
A one day course covering:
  • Stab work.
  • Basic engraving techniques.
  • Decorating a spoon (provided).
All courses include the following:

  • Tools and wood provided.

  • Wood to take home.

  • Course notes.

  • Refreshments.

The course fee is £150 per person per day.

About Martin

Martin Damen is a Maker of Hand-Carved Spoons and Bowls.  Traditional hand tools are used by Martin to make his spoons and bowls from timber sourced from within 10 miles of the workshop.

Martin teaches a range of courses at his workshop on a private tuition basis.
